  • Number Line Estimation: Provide a number line with marked intervals of 10,000. Ask students to estimate where different numbers would fall on the number line. Discuss the closest 10,000 to each number.
  • If you prefer a quick manual method, remember these steps: Identify the hundreds digit: This is the digit in the hundreds place. Look at the tens digit: If the tens digit is 5 or greater, round up the hundreds digit by 1. If the tens digit is less than 5, keep the hundreds digit the same. Change all digits to the right of the hundreds place to zero.
  • Example: Round 3,472 to the nearest hundred. The hundreds digit is 4. The tens digit is 7, which is greater than 5. So, we round up the hundreds digit to 5. The answer is 3,500.
